Apollo Heights

Apollo Heights is White Music for Black People, but all are welcome! Come practice your Japanese conversational skills with The Chavis brothers, or perhaps you will want to discuss Contemporary Art Criticism with Micah Gaugh. Honeychild Coleman (who just recently rejoined Apollo) can advise on sensible but edgy fashion on and off stage, but most important, Listen to their Music!!!

Apollo’s sound is reminiscent of Cocteau twins, not only because they have been a huge influence on the Chavis Brothers, but also because Robin Guthrie produced their debut album White Music for Black People.  Apollo Heights are back on the scene and have ambitious touring plans in support of their soon to be sophomore release Killer of Sheep. Check them out live on June 6th at The Delancey  and/or June 9th at Glasslands Gallery and hear some new tunes that will be on their upcoming album!

Bear Hands

I know what you’re thinking….another “Brooklyn Bear Band”. It seems
to be choice to name bands after kindred animal spirits these days.
However, these guys don’t play their instruments as if they have bear
hands…. maybe they give bear hugs?

Live, Bear Hands are energetic, enthusiastic, and engaging with their
audience. That’s three E’s that make an A+ in my book! They will be playing on April18th at Shank and you should be there! Check out their EP
Golden, then get your bear butts out there and support this young
budding talent!

Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles

Tired of Brooklyn bands with bad attitudes? Then check out, Langhorne Slim and The War Eagles, a Brooklyn bunch with a sound of Southern Comfort. The music is honest, and the performance is 100%.  You can catch them at Bell House on April 3rd. The ambiance is rugged and driven so come casual and prepared to drink Whiskey Sours in your grandma’s favorite flower dress and motorcycle boots.

Native Black = Black Fangs (but not really)

Here are the photographs of the formerly known Native Black, who are now called Black Fangs(which makes me very sad). If you didn’t get to go and check them out at Trash Bar or Pianos, hopefully they will come to NYC again before they blow up so  you can have bragging rights about this hip obscure band that you know from Philly.

Native Black

Native Black is red lights, moody guitars, black tees, smoky bass, unfiltered cigarettes, tattooed boys and a shot of whiskey in your morning coffee. Live guitars and percussion give it a rock n roll feel, but minus the labored hair and anticipated moves. Catch this Philly four-some at Trash Bar on March 11th; the ambiance is swanky so the attire should be sullen and sexy. Hope to see you there, but in the meantime check them out on the web!
